Promotion of the Art of Tap Dance
Announces Launch of $85 Million Capital Campaign
and
Unveils Plans for New
Building to Provide a
Home for Tap Dancers
TLF Seeks 1 Million Tap Lovers to Donate $85 Each
New York, NY, February 14, 2009 - The Tap Legacy Foundation, dedicated
to the preservation and promotion of the art of tap dance, has announced
the launch of an $85 million capital campaign fundraising drive,
and unveiled plans for the construction of a new building that will establish
a cultural center and education facility dedicated to the art form of tap
dancing. The building will include rehearsal and performance space, exhibit
halls and a digital library housing the archives of legendary tap performers.
The “One In A Million” campaign’s goal is to reach out to one million
people - tap lovers across the world, who will each make a one-time donation
of $85 towards its new home. The building design will incorporate the names
of all one million donors.
According to Andrew Nemr, President of the Foundation, “We are asking
all those who have ever put on a pair of tap shoes, attended a tap show,
or enjoyed the company of a tap dancer, to step forward. We need One Million
fans and practitioners, enthusiasts and professionals, audience members
and presenters, to show the world that tap dance is an art form deserving
of its own home.”
The construction of a home for tap marks a milestone in American culture,
attesting to the popularity and overwhelming support for one of America’s
indigenous art forms. Tap Dance is America's contribution to the
world of percussive dance. Passed down through an oral tradition from its
inception, Tap Dance has been seen in theaters, clubs and film around the
world. Tap Dancers have also contributed to numerous audio recordings and
have been sited as being integral to the evolution of Jazz.
The announcement was made by Mr. Nemr at an anniversary celebration on
February 14. The announcement preceded a screening of the classic
1989 dance film, Tap, starring the late Gregory Hines, who
was co-founder of the Foundation.
Gensler is proud to support the Tap Legacy Foundation and its newly
launched capital campaign, with the goal of preserving and advancing the
art of tap dance. Gensler is a global design, planning, and strategic consulting

Gregory Hines co-founded Tap Legacy Foundation (TLF) in 2002 with Andrew
J. Nemr. The Foundation champions the cultural contribution tap dancers
have made over the years and presents programs developed to ensure that
the art form continues to thrive. .
